You all know the feeling – trapped in the office with the hangover from hell, wondering just how quickly you’ll be fired if you throw up in the plant pot by the photocopier. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With these four completely natural remedies that really work, your hangovers will be a thing of the past.
Banana and honey smoothie for a potassium top-up
One of the main reasons you suffer from a hangover the day after drinking is that your body’s potassium levels have been severely depleted due to the diuretic effects of alcohol.That’s why one of the best ways of curing your hangover is to eat a potassium-packed banana. But let’s face it – when you’re suffering from the hangover to end all hangovers, solid foods are often well and truly out of the question. If you’re not quite feeling up to forcing down a banana, whip up a delicious banana and honey super smoothie instead.
Take a full sliced banana, and blend it with half a pint of milk, some ice, and two tablespoons of honey to make a delicious smoothie that will cure your hangover. As well as the potassium boost from the banana, the fructose in the honey helps to speed up the recovery process by accelerating the metabolism of alcohol in your body.
Replenish your B vitamins with lean meat
When you drink alcohol, the vitamin levels in your body take a hit. You can fight back by topping up on B vitamins, which are an integral part of the alcohol metabolisation process. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that vitamin B6 helps to reduce over 50 per cent of hangover symptoms.
Meat is a great source of vitamin B6, but don’t be tempted to strain your already struggling liver with a fried breakfast. Lean cuts of pork, chicken and turkey are particularly high in vitamin B6, so they’re the way to go. As an added bonus, lean cuts of meat are high in protein. Again, if you can’t stomach solids in the midst of a hungover morning there are other options. You can replace lean meat with a vitamin B complex supplement that contains B1, B2, B6, B12 and folic acid.
Asparagus to prep your body
Not all hangover cures have to be a ‘day after the night before’ affair. By eating the right foods in the evening before your big night out, you can drastically reduce the severity of your hangover.
According to scientists in Korea, asparagus is one of the best foods out there when it comes to prepping your body for a night of drinking. Their research, published in the Journal of Food Science, found that people who ate asparagus displayed fewer hangover symptoms than those who didn’t.
Asparagus increases the body’s levels of two special enzymes that help with the breakdown of ethanol – acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and alcohol dehydrogenase. This accelerated ethanol breakdown minimises the toxic effects of alcohol, leaving you feeling fresh and alert in the morning.
Tiger balm to banish your headache
If your hangover headache is akin to a heavy metal band playing a never-ending gig at the back of your skull, it’s time to invest in some Tiger Balm. Tiger Balm is a 19th century Asian herbal remedy, made from menthol, camphor and clove bud oil, and usingit couldn’t be easier. Simply rub some Tiger Balm onto your forehead, your temples, and the back of your neck, and your hangover headache will fade away before you know it. This topical pain relieving remedy is particularly effective as a hangover headache cure because it’s what’s known as a ‘counter irritant’. The tingly mixture of hot and cold you’ll feel when you apply the ointment interrupts the pain transmissions from your brain, and causes your headache to disappear.
A study published in The Australian Family Physician confirmed this,finding that Tiger Balm was just as effective when it comes to headache relief as aspirin and paracetamol.
